On monday, December 1st 2008, the Virginia Beach Fire Department conducted a live burn to test a life saving device, the Last Chance Rescue Filter. This device is designed to provide a firefighter fifteen minutes of filtered escape air in the event they experience an out of air emergency or have a catastrophic failure of their self contained breathing apparatus while they are in a fire.
The burn was conducted at the departments burn building located at the Fire Training Center 927 South Birdneck Road, Virginia Beach, VA. Seven Fire Departments in the Hampton Roads area participated in the exercise. We had a total of 53 firefighters in attendance.
